Hi, I’m Debbie

Designing with Purpose: A Human-Centered Approach to UX

Debbie Gray

I’m a UX Director with twenty years of experience in design, research, and front-end development, and a decade of experience leading teams.

Recent Experience

UX Director  @  Fair Trade USA  /  2021 to Present

UX team lead, contributing to planning and leadership decisions for the Digital Tech team, managing UX design and research, and using design thinking to deliver solutions for Fair Trade USA producers and businesses around the world. Formerly Senior Manager, UX.

Senior UX Designer  @  First American Home Warranty  /  2017 to 2021

I transitioned into a management position that encompassed a range of specialties, including UX design, web and landing page development, and conversion optimization. I successfully led multiple UX projects from conception to completion, such as customer portals, and effectively optimized purchase and renewal paths, resulting in substantial increases in conversion rates.

Owner, Designer & Developer  @  Deborah Gray Design  /  2014 to 2017

As owner, my responsibilities included running a boutique web design agency, managing 3 contractors, web and print design, wireframing, prototyping, completing UX analysis and tasks for all projects, testing and QA, front-end development, custom WordPress development using my own base theme, custom Shopify development, as well as project management and client communication.

UX Design

I design with purpose and function in mind. I’m a proponent of design thinking, human-centered design, and Agile methodologies.

UX Research

We don’t know until we ask. I believe in a scientific approach to UX research, based on generating hypotheses and testing with the intended audience. Synthesizing and keeping research current is critical.

Web Design

I’ve designed and developed dozens of custom websites for small to large businesses. My emphasis in my business was on non-profits.

Illustration

I’m an artist and illustrator. I’ve been drawing since I could hold a pencil. More than a creative outlet, my art helps me think more creatively and allows me to be open to experimentation.
